PRACTICE

Flockhart Architects are an experienced and contemporary design practice with a passion for energy efficient buildings and the sustainable re-use of existing structures.  We have a studio in Glasgow and a remote office in Dumfries and Galloway, where our practice was first established. We combine our practice work with part-time teaching and assisting with community initiatives.

In 2012 we relocated to Scotland and after a short career break, Amanda set up her own practice in Dumfries and Galloway.  In recent years, since joining together in practice, we have developed extensive experience and understanding in working with existing buildings which may be empty, forgotten or unfulfilled to bring about re-invigorated and transformative designs in a palpably sustainable manner.

We are a husband and wife team and first met in the year 2001 whilst working in Glasgow. We both came from similar backgrounds having served apprenticeships as architectural technicians before studying architecture. Over the years we have worked for a number of different practices gaining a range of experience in the healthcare, education, community, residential and commercial sectors.

The following is a selection of the projects we have worked on:

After 10 years of working in private practices in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow, Amanda established Flockhart Architects in 2014.  Over recent years Amanda has developed and grown the practice focussing on domestic, community and small scale commercial projects. Amanda also enjoys working within her local community and was one of the founding trustees of the Shambellie House redevelopment project In New Abbey. Amanda is an active member of the GIA small practice group, a member of Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland and the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland. Amanda has an SQA Level 3 award in Energy Efficiency Measures for Older and Traditional Buildings and recently completed the Association for Project Safety's course in the 'Principal Designer's Role'.

Since graduating in 2000, Alex has worked on a diverse range of projects including large scale award winning residential, educational, health and commercial projects in Glasgow and London, to high end bespoke houses & extensions in Scotland.  Alex has designed & delivered many low carbon houses integrating fabric first principles with current renewable technologies. Alex combines work with part-time tutoring at the Mackintosh School of Architecture & has also lectured in Glasgow & London universities.
