SUN ROOM, DALBEATTIE
Full architectural service
This sun room extension is located two miles to the north-east of Dalbeattie on the Solway Coast. Historically the linear stone block served as an outbuilding for farm horses and in 2000 it was developed into three houses. The extension is located at the north end of the terrace on an elevated landscaped plain with a sloping grass embankment to the rear and a stunning north-west aspect to the front commanding distant views toward the hills.
The new sun room extends from the existing rear dining room to provide a flexible space which has a direct connection both with the new outside garden terrace and distant landscape views. The extension subtly contrasts with the original house by adopting a contemporary approach to the detail. Generous areas of high performance windows and roof lights maximise the available light and capture the stunning views to the front. It also carefully respects and attempts to harmonise with the cottage and terrace by using a similar palette of external materials - granite walling, dual pitch slated roof with verge skew stones, painted timber gable, fascia and soffit boards with colour matched composite windows. Internally the extension is vaulted to provide an unexpected generous light filled volume beyond the existing compressed rooms to create a space that connects directly with the immediate and wider landscape that it sits within.
