This project features a modestly scaled extension to the rear of a detached house in Newton Mearns. The goal was to create a more spacious kitchen and dining area with enhanced connectivity to the client's beloved garden, while also adding a new office, a separate utility room, and an enlarged shower room.
The extension, designed as a continuation of the existing kitchen, includes an L-shaped kitchen with an island and a dining area with a built-in table oriented toward the garden and the woods beyond.
Inside the original house, the former kitchen has been divided to create a separate utility room and office. To bring more natural light into the interior hallway, sun-pipes were installed.
Externally, the material palette remains consistent with the original house, featuring a slate roof, wet dash render and new high-performance triple-glazed windows and doors.
The design respects the form and character of the existing house, maintaining a balanced solid-to-void ratio. The extension's scale and appearance are sympathetic to the surrounding streetscape. Facing south-east, a new raised timber terrace provides a place to sit and enjoy morning coffee.
