FARM COTTAGE
EXTENSION

This project involves a 110m2 single storey extension to the rear of an existing traditional stone-built farm cottage in Galloway.  The existing cottage had originally been two separate workers cottages and the layout did not support modern living.  The existing rear extension which housed the kitchen and main entrance was dark and impractical, with no dining area.

The brief was to improve the layout and increase the accommodation to include a larger kitchen & dining area with separate utility space, as well as a large bathroom & separate shower room  The cottage was to remain as a 3 bedroomed home with a larger master suite and dressing room.

Like many traditional cottages in this area, the original cottage had originally been built very close to a country road which now has 60mph traffic trundling past.  We needed to consider noise and also safety for our client who have a young family.  We looked at lots of different options for the placement of the new extension, in the end the client settled on this L-shaped scheme. By demolishing the old kitchen extension, a new west facing courtyard is created which is accessed from the existing lounge and new kitchen/dining space.

At the connection point between old and new, we created a new front door and generous hallway away from the busy road-side. The lower portion of roof over the new entrance provides visual separation between the old and new parts.
