This project involved the extension & internal reorganisation of a 1980’s bungalow in Gatehouse of Fleet.
Although bungalows are great in terms of room size and accessibility, they were mostly bought off plan, so there was little or no opportunity for the purchaser to vary the design according to approach, orientation or views.
Our brief was to create a more obvious entrance, better storage, space for music & a new kitchen extension with better views & lots of natural light.
We added a simple dual pitched extension to the rear which looks directly onto the new approach so that the client can see visitors approaching when in the kitchen. The roof of the new extension is extruded to create a more recognisable entrance on approach and a sheltered canopy. The new lounge area with wood burning stove provides views to the gardens beyond, and catches the evening sun.
Internally, we reorganised the layout to create an enlarged hall with lots of storage for a growing family, a separate utility space, a WC cloakroom, large hall cupboard plus a dedicated area for music practice,…and a grand piano! Where connections between old and new were required, we worked with the existing openings to reduce the need for steelwork.
For this project we provided a partial service to building warrant.
