Barn Conversion

Updated: Jul 26, 2021

We have recently submitted a planning application for the conversion of a traditional stone barn & gin-gang into a 3 bedroomed dwelling near Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway. The site is accessed via a private track, leading to an open gravel courtyard which separates the single storey 'L' shaped barn from an existing two storey farmhouse. Free standing stone walls attach the barn to the house and form the courtyard enclosure.

Our strategy towards the design of this conversion is to respect the material presence of the original structure and adopt a light touch in creating new openings to bring light and aspect to the new rooms, thereby allowing the homogeneous character of the stone barn to remain dominant. The arrangement of the layout has been planned to coincide with the as found nature of spaces and openings of the barn structure. The proposal adopts an inherently sustainable approach in utilising a largely redundant traditional stone barn and giving it a new purpose.
